Cochineal - Severe plague affecting El Rio De Aguas and all of Almeria.

It measures 3-5 millimeters in length, is usually brown or yellow, and feeds parasitizing the sap of cacti and plants and the moisture present there.

The dark red color dye is used extensively for cosmetic and food industry, lending its color for cookies, jellies, desserts, and is also used in medicine and clothing, usually specified as "natural dye carmine cochineal," CI 75470 or E120 in the compositions of products.

it is necessary to kill about seventy thousand insects to achieve about half a kilo of dye.

Lucas has started  cleaning the dead cactus to create space for re-birth.

Pictures of the El Rio Spring 19/09/2015. We have had 48 mm of rain this month and there is a little more water in the river. Not much, but some. It shows that we are not totally dependent on the aquifer..

 Here we are at the place where there used to be a dam to push the water into the tunnel to feed the Irrigation Line

 Here is the pond which used to be a flowing small river feeding the line.

 We are looking at the non-existent feed from the Nacamiento. (Spring)

I am up the mountain looking down on the non-existent flow - see the white strip alongside the cane - that is where the river used to be. !
